Alastair Cook masterclass
It’s not often that the students at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City get to learn from specialist batsmen who’ve amassed plenty of runs and excellent in all forms of the game time and time again.
Last week, England batsmen Alastair Cook dropped by at the Academy for a masterclass with the facility’s Junior Warriors. Although we were expecting about 30 children to attend the event, Alastair’s class saw nearly three times the number of eager youngsters turn up to learn from an expert who’s seen and done it all in the gentleman’s game.
During his afternoon at the ICCA, Alastair explained to the youngsters the importance of stroke selection and shot making, pointing out to them the significance of placing their shot in the right area.
He also emphasised the value of quick reflexes, which are oftentimes the difference between a long walk back to the pavilion and a ball that travels a long way. The kids were then coached in perfecting those reflexes so that they could be put to good use in the future.
‘Cooky’ was also more than happy to sign a few autographs for his ardent fans.
Academy Manager William Kitchen was delighted so see the kids soak in his fellow countryman’s advice.
“Alastair is an extremely skilled batsman who has played all forms of the game, and to maintain the level of consistency at the top that he has is an extremely difficult thing to do,” he opined.
“For these kids to learn from him makes them extremely lucky and these are all very valuable skills that they can put to good use in the future. Alastair’s arrival epitomises what we want to do at the ICC Academy in terms of becoming and then remaining the world’s best cricket development academy and our world-class facilities certainly aid the sportsmen who come here in doing that.
“We thank Alastair for his time here and will be more than happy to welcome him here in the future as well.”
