Oxford Marine, Coca-Cola & Al Futtaim crowned champions
Oxford Marine, the Al Futtaim Logistics and team Coca-Cola were crowned champions of the gold, silver and bronze division finals of the Sprite Challengers Cup held at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City last night.
The three teams’ triumphs have capped what has been a furiously exciting few weeks at the Home of Elite Cricket, replete with a gamut of emotions, ranging from agony to ecstasy with everything from angst and nervousness to joy and relief in between.
The format of this indoor tournament sees teams bat for a total of 12 overs, with pairs of batsmen taking to the crease for three overs. Five runs are deducted every time a wicket falls, leading to some nerve-jangling, adrenaline-inducing battles.
This victory only adds to the Oxford Marines’ quality at the ICC Academy as one of the most successful teams at Dubai Sports City.
Facing off against the Pacific Ventures in the Gold Final, Oxford did excellently to restrict their opponents to just 37 runs from 12 overs, and with a low target to reach in their innings, they already had one hand on the trophy after the end of the first innings.
However, team Pacific are also one of the most respected teams in the Sprite Challengers Cup, and ensured that the Marines had to work very hard for their win. In the end, they won by the smallest of margins, their score of 39 doing just enough to assure them victory.
Oxford were joined on the winners’ podium by the Al Futtaim Logistics, who’d enjoyed a superb campaign all the way to the final.
Al Futtaim put up a score of a respectable 63 runs from their 12 overs, but knew that they wouldn’t win the title on their ability with the bat alone. Their bowlers responded well to the challenge, restricting their opponents the Knight Riders to 51 runs as they lifted the Silver Division trophy on the back of a 12-run win.
Like Al Futtaim and the Oxford Marines, Coca-Cola also displayed good form during the Bronze Division leg of the tournament. Unlike the other two winners, Coca-Cola were able to enjoy a rather handsome win over BATT Mobile.
BATT mobile could only manage 34 runs from their time at the crease and the boys from Coke gave them a lesson in batting prowess as they plundered 72 runs from the same number of overs.
Coca-Cola’s superb performances throughout the tournament saw them walk away with three accolades: Danish Mohsin was crowned both Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament.
It was the same for the Al Futtaim Logistics, where Aqib was awarded the Player of the Tournament award, while Fairoz received the Man of the Match Award.
The night also saw the Pacific Ventures rewarded for their dedication during the Sprite Challengers Cup, with Rohan Mustafa picking up the trophy for the Man of the Match award, with his namesake Rohan Nayak of Oxford Marine winning the Player of the Tournament award, with trophies for the entire event being provided by Crystal Gallery, the ICC Academy’s trophy partner.
