Pacific Ventures crowned Challengers Cup Gold Champions
It was a thrilling finale to a thrilling tournament.
Pacific Ventures, SFS and DBMSC were crowned winners of the Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions in the Challengers Cup at the ICC Academy here on Thursday night.
Given the prowess, determination and never-say-die-attitude that these three teams had showed throughout the tournament, there will be few who can say the three of them are not deserved winners.
Batting first in the Gold Final, team Pacific Ventures put up a handsome total of 89 runs from their 12 overs, in which two batsmen bat in pairs for three overs each.
Asif and Nishanth (both 13) and Rohith and Ramveer (both 14) scored the majority of the runs for the team.
In response, the Knight Riders could only muster a total of 50 runs, despite promising contributions from Adnan (12), Asif (14), Ashraf and Wali (both 11), as the Pacific Ventures emerged victors by a large margin of 39 runs.
The Pacific Ventures’ celebrations were also echoed by team SFS and DBMSC.
The Silver Division Final went down to the wire as only four runs separated the two teams at the end. Electing to bat first, team SFS scored a remarkable 78 runs from their 12 overs, with Sameer, Omer (both 11), Jay (12), Ojas (17) and Rahul (13) all contributing to the scoreline.
In response, Oxford Marine came mightily close and nerves were quickly fraying after runs were coming for them as quickly as wickets were tumbling following the runs posted on the board by Nawaz (18), Samman (15) and Badi (15).
In the end though, team Oxford Marine ran out of steam as they came to tantalisingly close yet so mundanely far to victory at the Home of Elite Cricket.
The two winners were joined on the podium by DBMSC, who overcame the Sandpipers by just five runs to seal for themselves the title of Bronze Champions.
It was a case of teams batting first winning the Silver and Gold championships, and the Bronze Final turned out to be no different. There was still however, plenty of cause for people to chew nervously on their fingernails as they just about managed to hold on to the edge of their seats.
Sajjad, Santosh (both 14) and Mahesh (10) stood out among the batsmen as DBMSC made 64 runs from their allotted 12 overs.
Despite George (15) and Rupesh (17) making contributions with the bat for the Sandpipers, the team batting second needed a spread of runs from the rest of their players as well. Although runs did come at a steady rate on the board, it didn’t come quickly enough for the team.
There was however a consolation prize for them: Rupesh was named both Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament of the Bronze Division.
In the Silver Division, Nawaz from Oxford Marine was named Man of Match, while the award for Player of the Tournament went to Faizan, and in the Gold Division, both awards went to team Pacific Ventures, with Rohan and Asif being named Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament respectively.
Thus came to an end yet another edition of the UAE’s premier indoor tournament. With more than 10,000 AED in prize monies and trophies from Crystal Galleries, our Trophy Partner, this is indeed an exciting, action-packed sporting extravaganza that is as fun as it is exciting.
