ICC Academy’s PowerBase Cricket Cage @ ICC Academy

Dubai, Tuesday 19th April 2016: The International Cricket Council Academy at Dubai Sports City today announced the launch of its PowerBase conditioning facility and a new cricket training and play area, its Cricket Cage, at the already world-renowned cricket venue.

PowerBase is a purpose-built indoor and outdoor conditioning facility, dedicated to athletic development and the specific physical training which is required to play elite cricket.

PowerBase was designed by ICC Academy Sport Science Lead Peter Kelly, who consulted widely with many of the globe’s leading cricket teams and sporting bodies. It includes specific areas for strength, power, speed and endurance training as well as areas built specifically for physical testing and functional training.

The days of the gentle jog in preparation for a Test Match are well and truly gone. Cricket players are truly elite athletes. At PowerBase, one can see fast bowlers loaded with Olympic weights or flipping HGV tyres, or batsmen boxing in order to prepare themselves for the demands of the game.

As well as supporting the development of the professional players from overseas that train at ICC Academy, members of the ICC Academy’s successful Warriors coaching programme and the UAE National team will also benefit from this new addition. Furthermore, PowerBase will play a key role in the education of aspiring or current Strength and Conditioning Coaches, and support the development of Physiotherapists.

In addition to PowerBase, the Cricket Cage is a fully floodlit, multi-use cricket space designed for coaching, practice and games.  It has been custom built to function as an 8-aside cricket ‘court’, featuring tension netting and marking to enable indoor-league style cricket outdoors.  Alternatively, the space can be converted to up to 6 practice net lanes for batting, bowling and coaching.  It is aimed at local teams and players that want to play games in the wide range of ICC Academy leagues and tournaments as well as people that simply want to practice and improve.

Dubai Sports City President, Khalid Al Zarooni said: “The unveiling of PowerBase and the new Cricket Cage today represents a great addition to our existing word-class facilities at Dubai Sports City. Within the Sports Village, we are proud to have the finest training areas that cater to all levels of ability.  Whether you are starting out on your sporting journey, or are a high performance professional, we have something for you.”

“The ICC Academy is an integral part of Dubai Sports City, and with such a strong passion for cricket in Dubai and UAE, we want to provide the very best of training and match facilities. The brand new facility will enhance our existing offerings and provide everything a cricketer needs in one place.”

Having put the finishing touches to its venue very recently, the PowerBase facility has already welcomed a host of top class players and teams in the last month.

Recent visitors included a select group of English First Class County players who undertook an intensive pre-season conditioning camp.  As a result of the quality of the set-up and resources on hand, ICC Academy was able to pass them back to their County sides for the upcoming English First Class season in better shape than ever before, along with the data to back it up.

Maqbul Dudhia, General Manger, Sports and Events Business, Dubai Sports City said: “This is a phenomenal space for cricketers from all over the world to use and importantly from the local community here in UAE. We have made sure that leading cricket authorities from across the globe fed into the development process and we are very happy with the results and can’t wait to see all levels of cricketers make the most from the outstanding new facility.”

ICC Academy Manager, Will Kitchen added: “ICC Academy’s primary role is to improve performance for cricket players, whatever their level or ability.  PowerBase and the new Cricket Cage provides us with yet more tools with which we can do that, enabling us to further support not only players and teams, but also the coaches and support staff that work with players through our education programmes based out of there.”

“I think what we’ve created enables us to diversify our offering even further.  We host the best players in the world. They will thrive in the PowerBase and fine-tune the physical skills they need to perform on the world stage.  Our Cricket Cage represents another level of support to the local cricket community, a space for players to improve and practice, as well as a thrilling environment for teams to compete in. This year we expect to host over 600 teams playing ‘indoor’ league style cricket and the Cricket Cage has grown our capacity to do so significantly.”

Whilst PowerBase will be used regularly by high-performance teams from around the world, there will be weekly conditioning sessions for members as well as a limited number of private memberships available.  The Cricket Cage is available for hire to individuals and teams, and to host weekly coaching sessions as well as weekly leagues.
