Strong start for the under 14’s despite defeat

Home | Strong start for the under 14’s despite defeat

A defeat is never an ideal result. A solid performance nonetheless, our under 14’s and  Coach Keagan Clarke will grab all the positives from a close game against Cornwall and ensure the boys cross the finish line before their opponents in the upcoming fixtures.

Captain Muhammad Shadad called the right side of the coin on a sunny day in Taunton, having no hesitation in asking his team to make first use of the wicket with the bat. Openers Yahya Saeed and Joseph Bold were bowled out cheaply, however, the former faced 26 deliveries before his departure.

Muhammad gave the impetus to the innings at no. 3 with a quick fire 35 off 50 deliveries. He was well supported by Abdual Murad in the middle order, who scored a valiant 33 off 71 deliveries. Late cameos from Rishab Mukherjee and Saahil Menon took the total to 193, a par score for the occasion.

Early wickets would have been on everyone’s mind when the boys set out to defend the total in the second innings. That wasn’t to be the case.

Cornwall began positively, their openers largely untroubled to our pace attack, the trio of Rohan Mariadason, Hasnain Hassan and Saahil Menon. Aryan Raj Wahi finally broke the opening stand when he dismissed Sam Wyatt for 32. His opening partner, Lewis Goldsworthy, was unbeaten right till the end with 78 to his account, an innings that our boys would want to emulate in the remaining fixtures.

Rishab Mukherjee ran through the middle order in a late twist to the game. He finished with figures of 3/28 from his 28 overs, all of which saw the stumps uprooted from the pitch. His all-round performance will be the biggest positive to come out of this close contest.

The most important wicket, that of Lewis Goldsworthy, would have helped us clinch the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the case.

This defeat shouldn’t bother the camp too much. There are plenty of positives to be taken, and the boys are well aware of that. Having said that, as many as 52 runs were leaked through wides, an area that certainly needs to be improved before the next game.

We are sure on reporting positive news next time around.
